How can we help?

Answers to the questions artists ask most. Can't find yours? Write to us at the bottom of the page.

Getting started

What is Creative Code Art?

A free home for artists who make art with code. You get a page of your own, artworks that run live in the browser, remixes that always credit the original, and a community with challenges, exhibitions and a journal.

New here? The tour shows it all in five minutes.

Does it cost anything?

No. Everything is free. There is nothing to buy, no ads, and no commissions. Your data is never sold.

How do I sign up or sign in?

Go to Sign in and enter your email. We send you a link that works once and expires after 15 minutes. The first time you sign in, your account is created. There's no password to remember.

What is a passkey, and should I add one?

A passkey lets you sign in with your fingerprint, face or screen lock instead of waiting for an email. Add one in your account after signing in. It's worth adding a second one on another device, so losing a phone doesn't lock you out.

The sign-in email didn't arrive
  • Wait a minute, then look in your spam or promotions folder.
  • Check the address you typed.
  • Ask for a new link: each link works once and expires after 15 minutes.

Still nothing? Write to us at the bottom of this page.

Your artist page

How do I create my artist page?

Sign in, open your account and press Create my artist page. Choose your address (creativecodeart.com/@yourname), your name, a short bio, your tools, your city and country, and your links. It takes about two minutes.

Can I change my address?

Yes, in Edit profile. Links you've already shared with the old address will stop working, so change it early if you can.

Who can see my page?

Your artist page is public. In Edit profile you choose whether you appear in artist search, whether your country lights up on the world map, and whether search engines such as Google can find your page. Your email is never shown to anyone.

How do following and notifications work?

Press Follow on an artist's page to hear when they publish. The bell at the top tells you when someone follows you, remixes your work, or when the team features your work, picks it in a challenge or puts it in an exhibition.

Making works

Which tools can I use?

Four, all written in the editor in My works:

  • p5.js: write setup() and draw() as usual.
  • GLSL shader: a fragment shader, including Shadertoy's mainImage.
  • three.js: 3D, as a JavaScript module.
  • Canvas JS: plain JavaScript with a canvas ready to draw on.

The preview runs as you type.

What are sliders?

Numbers in your work that visitors can change while it runs. Add them in the editor and read them in your code as params.name (in a shader, the uniform u_name). Up to 12 per work.

Where does the picture of my work come from?

When you publish, the site lets your work draw for a moment, then takes a still image for grids and link previews. If it catches a blank moment, edit the work and publish again.

My work can't load an image, font or file from the internet

That's on purpose. Every work runs walled off, without internet access, so no work can track visitors or reach their accounts. Draw everything in code, or put small images and fonts in the code as data: addresses. Code can be up to 100 KB.

Is it safe to run other people's code?

Yes. Each work runs in a locked sandbox: it can't reach the internet, your cookies or your account, and it can't change the page around it.

Remixes and licences

What is a remix?

If the artist allows it, Remix copies a work into your own editor with one click. A remix always credits the original, forever, and every work page shows its whole remix family.

Which licence should I choose?
  • CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (the default): others may remix with credit, not for commercial use, and share under the same terms.
  • CC BY-SA 4.0 and CC BY 4.0: remix with credit, commercial use allowed.
  • MIT: open-source code.
  • All rights reserved: people can view the work but not remix it.

A remix keeps the original's licence.

Can I keep my code secret?

You can hide the View the code button. But the code has to reach a visitor's browser to run there, so it isn't truly secret. Choose a licence that says how others may use it.

Challenges, exhibitions and the journal

How do I take part in a challenge?

While a challenge is open, publish a work for its theme and enter it from the challenge's page. You can enter up to 3 of your works. The team may pick entries to highlight; a pick is recognition, never a prize or money.

How does a work get into an exhibition or featured?

The team chooses works for exhibitions and for the homepage. There's no form to apply: publish works you're proud of and take part in challenges. When your work is chosen, you get a notification.

Can I write for the journal?

Yes. Anyone with an artist page can write tutorials, process notes or essays in My account → My articles, in English or Persian, and send them for review. Put a work's link on a line of its own to show it running live inside the article. Editors publish it or suggest changes.

Safety, privacy and your data

How do I report a page or a work?

Sign in, then press Report this page or Report this work at the bottom of it and choose a reason. A moderator looks at every report, and the artist isn't told who reported them. You can also write to us below.

Someone posted my work as their own

Report the work and choose Uses someone else's work without credit, or write to us below with links to your original. We take credit seriously.

How do I download my data or delete my account?

In your account, under Your data: download a copy of everything we hold about you, or delete your account, your page and your works for good.

What do you do with my data?

Only what the site needs to work. We never sell it and never show ads. The privacy page explains what we keep, why and for how long.

Still need help?
